The nymph echo in the process of fading away, leaving only her voice.

Asteroid Interpretation Series

Echo (60)

In Ovid’s myth, Echo was a joyful and talkative mountain nymph who was cursed by Hera to only repeat the last few words she heard, her original voice stolen. This happened after Echo followed Zeus’ orders and tried to protect the other nymphs by distracting Hera from catching him in another one of his affairs/betrayals. Later, Echo fell hopelessly in love with the handsome Narcissus, as he traveled through her wood hunting deer.

She was unable to tell him how she felt about him, only able to repeat words spoken to her. While hunting he had become lost, and tried calling for his friends by yelling "is anyone out there?" Echo, watching him from the trees repeated his words to him. He yelled “come here!” And she repeated his words again. He was confused and yelled "Here! This way! Please, we must come together."

In Echo’s mind, she thought this was a sign from him that he had felt the same way for her, and she yelled back what she could: "we must come together!" She ran to him excitedly, but was met with disgust. He told her ‘Hands off! May I die before you enjoy my body.’ She left heartbroken whispering “enjoy my body”, although some have her saying “may I die.”

After his cruel and apathetic rejection, she was forced to watch from the trees as he fell deeper and deeper in love with himself. Narcissus, in turn, was punished by the goddess Nemesis for cruelly rejecting Ameinias and driving him to suicide before coming to the woods to hunt. She cursed him to never be with the one he fell in love with, and guided him to a pool of still water to quench his thirst. One no animals were recorded to have drank water from. He then fell in love with his own reflection and ultimately perished when he tried to be with himself within the water, mistaking it for marble.

She watched in horror, unable to speak out to stop him. This caused her to became consumed by her grief, and she slowly faded until only stone remained where her bones once were and the echoes of her voice remained. It haunted the hills, and left behind a sorrowful reminder of her unrequited love. Echo’s story reminds us of what happens when we lose our ability to speak our truth, when grief consumes us, and when our love is met with indifference or cruelty.

Asteroid Echo (60) in the natal chart can hold themes of gifted speech just as much as voice suppression. It can also show projection, issues with women, a loss of autonomy, limerence, longing, and emotional mirroring.

She may speak through patterns of repetition, unconscious mimicry, or the ache of not being truly heard. However, when Echo also holds the strength of her original self, of an extremely gifted speaker. She also can show where we find our voice again through reclamation once we give up our attachment to imitation. We may find difficulty with partners’ Juno placements in synastry as a result of their mythological interaction, especially if we see a >30’ influence of Echo.
